321ACTION: December 16, 2024
The text of the bill to continue funding the federal government at current levels is expected to be released today.
This bill includes emergency supplemental funding to support communities hit by natural disasters and temporarily extends the Farm Bill for a year. The bill must be enacted by midnight on Friday to prevent a government shutdown.
The House is expected to vote on the continuing resolution and leave town early for the winter holiday recess, with the Senate to follow after it passes the CR and also clears the National Defense Authorization Act (which contains problematic provisions harming transgender children of military families) and finishes confirming judges. The new Congress will convene January 3.
321 will also be taking a break. See you in January!
Ready to make a difference?
Here are three ways to get started:
3. Join Women to Watch
JWI is in the midst of our flagship annual event, Women to Watch! If you were not able to make it in-person, you can join our Women to Watch awards luncheon from 11:30 - 2:00 (with a brief break to eat) with a donation of any amount. Learn more here.
2. Learn what the election results mean for the tax code
The incoming Congress is expected to use a process called “budget reconciliation” to make substantial changes to the federal tax code, cutting taxes for corporations and very wealthy people and paying for those tax cuts by also cutting critical safety net programs such as Medicaid and food stamps.
Our friends at the Coalition on Human Needs will be hosting a free webinar, Our Path Forward: Practical ways to protect people from harm despite threats from the new Administration and Congress, on January 7 from 2 - 3:15 ET to preview what is coming and how to fight back.
1. Read about the dangerous trend of femicide
Homicide is the leading cause of death for pregnant and postpartum women in the United States. Read the story of Markitha Sinegal, a young woman in Louisiana (where homicide is the second-leading cause of death after accidental drug overdoses), who was murdered by her boyfriend nine months after giving birth.
+ In case you missed it...
After November’s election results, many gun violence prevention advocates — including those from faith communities — are asking, what comes next?
Join the Jewish Gun Violence Prevention Roundtable, the DC Area Interfaith Gun Violence Prevention Network, Faiths United Against Gun Violence, and Nuns Against Gun Violence on December 19 at 7:00 ET for a timely webinar, The Election of 2024: Threats and Opportunities for Gun Violence Prevention.
Expert panelists from the gun violence prevention movement will discuss what we can expect the next Administration and Congress to do to try to weaken existing gun laws and regulations, what legal challenges will likely be heard by the courts, and what opportunities exist for enacting stronger gun violence prevention laws at the state level.
